Mona Lisa: A Masterpiece of Leonardo

Who was Mona Lisa? What’s the mystery behind Leonardo’s artwork?

Mona Lisa is one of the most famous painting in the world. That painting was featured in some movies like Da Vinci Code and Mr. Peabody and Sherman.

There were edited pictures of Mona Lisa created by anonymous people. Look at the photos:

It was disrespectful, right? You will see that even Mr. Bean aka Rowan Atkinson, a famous actor, was used for fun. They edited the painting using his “funny” face. Yes, these are all funny but that’s not the right thing to do especially it was an art. Not just a simple art but a “historical art”. People don’t know what the importance of this kind of art is. Sad truth. Well, let’s talk about the painting.

The Mona Lisa is quite possibly the most well-known piece of painted artwork in the entire world. It was painted by the Leonardo Da Vinci, the famous Italian artist, between 1504 and 1519, and is a half body commission for a woman named Lisa Gherardini.

All about Mona Lisa

The Mona Lisa is a famous 16th-century portrait by Leonardo da Vinci. Historically, many believe that the portrait of Mona Lisa was Lisa Gherardini Giocondo, a wife of a wealthy Florentine merchant named Francesco del Giocondo. Her husband requested the work by Da Vinci just after the turn of the century. It is perhaps the most studied piece of artwork ever known. Others have suggested the subject was a mistress of da Vinci, or even a self-portrait, with da Vinci imagining himself as a woman.

Some secrets that you didn’t know about Mona Lisa

"MONA LISA" IS NOT HER NAME.
The painting’s subject is Lisa Gherardini. The name Mona Lisa (or Monna Lisa, as the Italians prefer) roughly translates to "My Lady Lisa."

MISSING EYEBROWS AND EYELASHES: A MATTER OF DEBATE

Some claim the subject’s lack of eyebrows is representative of high-class fashion of the time. Others insist her AWOL eyebrows are proof that Mona Lisa is an unfinished masterpiece. A theorist says that the hairlines were so fine that they have either faded away over the centuries, or were possibly washed away during a poor restoration job in the painting's 500-year life.

BEHIND THAT BACKGROUND

Most art historians believe the background, which features valleys and mountains, is an idealised, composite landscape drawn from the artist's imagination. The painting was kept in the Palace of Versailles until it was moved to the Louvre Museum in Paris, and remains the property of the French state.

“MAMA LISA?”

Is she pregnant? When you zoom in the photo, you will see that Mona Lisa has a baby bump and it was covered by her hands. That’s how Giocondo asked for a painting of his wife to celebrate the birth of his second son. She’s pregnant!

IS MONA LISA THE MOTHER OF LEONARDO?

Some historians say that she is the mother of Leonardo da Vinci. Her smile emerged from her mom.

ENIGMATIC SMILE

Art lovers have for centuries debated the reason for her enigmatic smile. Now it appears Mona Lisa may have been hiding a remarkable secret – she was a he.  An art historian claims the model in Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece was one of his male muses, a young man called Gian Giacomo Caprotti, whose nose and mouth bear striking similarities to those of Mona Lisa.

According to an art professor at a prestigious university, all Leonardo subjects look like each other because he represents an abstract ideal of beauty. They all have this dual characteristic of masculine and feminine.

SHE'S SMALLER THAN YOU MIGHT THINK.

Mona Lisa's influence in culture is massive, but the oil-on-wood panel painting measures just 30 by 21 inches and weighs 18 pounds.

IT'S LITERALLY PRICELESS.

In the 1960s, the painting went on a tour where it was given an insurance valuation of $100 million. But the policy was never taken out because the premiums were more than the cost of the best security.

THE PAINTING SITS IN THE WORLD'S PRETTIEST PRISON.

Mona Lisa gets her own room at the Louvre, one that is climate controlled to keep her in the ideal environment. Additionally, the work is encased in bulletproof glass to prevent threat and injury.

It’s important to know the significance of every artwork that people make. It’s important to know the information behind those kind of masterpiece. We must respect historical arts. We must obey people’s hard work and dedication doing their artworks. We should learn how to appreciate everyone’s effort.
